Although osteoporosis currently gets the lion share of attention in the media and medical profession, sarcopenia, a condition that affects muscles is equally important.
Sarcopenia literally means “vanishing flesh or muscle tissue” and bone loss and osteoporosis is associated with this condition. In fact, the two go hand in hand. Because muscles are attached to bone, if muscles are not kept strong there is less pulling on the bones to which they are attached, so they weaken as well. In other words, when you have diminishing muscles your bones are also being negatively affected.
Because adequate quality and quantity of skeletal muscles are necessary for optimal quality of life, sarcopenia is a devastating condition. Luckily it is suddenly also a “hot topic” in aging research and beginning to get the attention it should by researchers throughout the medical profession.
Sarcopenia is the result of inactivity. Not getting enough proper exercise – physical inactivity – adversely affects the function of the muscles, bones, brain, heart, blood vessels, liver, immune system and every other organ and system in the human body.
Without proper muscle building and maintenance exercises that work the muscular system, the body gets the message that it no longer needs strength so it automatically switches to “shutdown and degeneration mode.”
Unused muscles weaken and shrink and unloaded bones lose density, thickness and strength. Unused brain neurons die and nerves not being used degenerate. Unused joints and tendons lose strength and get damaged easier. An unused heart becomes scrawny and weak and cannot pump effectively. Lung capacity diminishes, and red blood cell count declines if oxygen demand is low. Pretty high price to pay for not getting proper exercise don’t you think?
To compound issues even more, an inactive person is more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression, find stress harder to manage and lose self-confidence and self-esteem.
In the end, not being active, affects the body down to the cellular level where the ability to transfer oxygen and nutrients from the bloodstream to cells is diminished. When you can’t get enough oxygen out of your blood, the quality of your entire life suffers and your body attracts disease rather than repelling it.
But the good news is, it does not have to be this way.
Strength Training
Although our modern lives do not offer the opportunity to build strength naturally, we are empowered to stop our muscles from wasting away with “intentional” strength training.
In order to stay strong and function properly, we must focus on “intentional exercise” and strength training is key.
Activity that works our muscular system forces our body to grow and allows natural and ongoing self-healing to take place. The brain receives the signal that we are physically active and reminds our body to continue to renew, repair and replace old worn out cells and tissues.
In other words, when we challenge our muscles with the right exercise then “growth and repair” hormones such as human growth hormones are stimulated and work their magic.
This process of growth spreads throughout every cell in the body making us not just a little bit younger and healthier but a whole lots younger and healthier.
This is the magical “self-healing’ mechanism that needs to be switched on at all times.
If you ready to tap into the power of your self-healing processes in order to MAXIMIZE your level of health…
