When it comes to aging, what path are you following?
How do you approach aging? What are your perceptions towards it?
Whatever they are, they are dictating your path. Are you traveling down the “anti-aging path” or treading dangerously on the “rapid-aging” road?
You do have a choice.
One honors wellness care providing, preserving and maintaining “health, wellness and vitality” and the other honors sickness care providing a “temporary patch on already damaged goods.”
While it’s true, we cannot freeze time and completely defy aging, what’s not true is that we don’t have to “just let it happen.”
Truth is, there are many things we can do to stop aging and ensure we pass through our senior years strong and graceful while looking and feeling our best.
FOCUS ON THE BODY
We must get back to focusing on our bodies. That means attention needs to be placed on diet and exercise. This article focuses on diet.
Diet
Most people would never consider putting low-grade fuel into their valuable car, yet continually turn around and put low grade fuel into their only real mode of transportation – their bodies. Is it any wonder that so many health issues have surfaced?
There are nutrition related issues that actually accelerate the aging process. By learning these, you can put your best foot forward to avoid them.
Lack of Anti-Oxidants
If there is one thing you want plenty of in your diet if you are going to combat the aging process is plenty of anti-oxidants.
Every day we encounter a number of toxic substances either in the air we breathe or because of unhealthy and unnatural substances that we consume. These stressors are slowly but surely breaking your body down and antioxidants are the “warriors” that help to defy this process.
They neutralize free radicals that would otherwise lead to oxidation damage and help combat diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Hair, skin and nails all benefit as well and you’ll feel more energized and healthy on a daily basis.
Not surprisingly, the best source of anti-oxidants are nature’s bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables (love those bright colors and greens!). Look to Mother Nature for nutrient dense choices providing the highest antioxidant intake.
Over-Consumption of Sugar
Sugar accelerates the aging process by placing great stress on the body. It upsets the natural balance of hormones sending glucose levels spiking and disturbing insulin levels.
The dangers of consuming plain white table sugar has been a “hot” topic for a while now and most try and avoid it. But sugar has a way of finding its way into your diet anyway and many people don’t even realize how high their daily intake of sugar is until they are struck down with diabetes or they’ve gained an excess of 10-20 pounds.
Additionally, sugar is void of needed nutrients. So, essentially you are putting “dead weight calories” into your body. Calories that do not contribute to your health. When cutting sugar out of your diet, be sure to replace it with sufficient carbohydrates.
The reality is, today’s foods are loaded with sugar. The only way to truly avoid eating too much sugar is to read labels and learn.
Eliminating Trans Fats
These fats serve no real purpose health wise but set you up for diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. On the other hand, the right fats such as olive oil, avocado oil, nuts, nut butters, and coconut based products all work towards preventing disease.
When reading labels, be on the look-out for “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.” These foods contain trans fats and need to be avoided.
Low Protein Intake
Protein is a must for tissue repair and rebuilding – essential for keeping the body functioning at its best. Without protein in your diet, your body does not receive the raw materials needed to generate new cells and the hormones necessary for keeping all systems in your body working properly, generating lean muscle mass. Lean muscle mass keeps you active and able to exercise as you should.
The best sources of protein to help avoid the aging process are chicken breast, turkey breast, lean red meats (only in moderation), fish and fresh seafood, low fat organic dairy products and quality whey or nondairy protein powder. However, be aware that a diet too rich in animal based foods can also speed up aging. You can also turn to non-meat sources of protein such as lentils, legumes, beans, seeds and nuts.
The benefits of adding more protein to your diet will hit you quickly. You’ll begin feeling better almost immediately.
Now that you have your diet in place, combine it with the second component to controlling the aging process – proper challenging exercise.
Exercise
Is key to making you look and feel your best and provides many benefits in regards to combating the aging process.
The equation is simple – a nutrient dense diet of right fuels, raw materials, and key nutrients, combined with proper exercise is your “powerhouse” duo.
You’ll be traveling the “anti-aging path” rather than succumbing to the “rapid-aging road.”
We have the power to control what we eat, how much exercise we get, how we deal with stress (which is believed to be a major factor in controlling cancer cell proliferation), how much quality sleep we get, and how to live a lifestyle that encourages superior health rather than disease. Unfortunately, most people fail to implement these tactics in a way that actually pays off in the long-term.
